Today, the 16th of September 2008, Malaysia celebrates its 45th birthday. It also marks the day UMNO died. Anwar Ibrahim, claimed to have the majority to replace the UMNO lead government. But the question remains whether UMNO is gentleman enough to concede gracefully or will resort to Myanmarese tactics by putting DSAI under house arrest ala Aung San Suu Kyi plight and then declare a state of emergency.
Fortunately, Malaysia current Prime Minister is not Mahathir or Razak. These two megalomaniac who have no scruples least of all gentlemen, will have no second thoughts of eliminating their enemies illegally or immorally. Ethics and honour is just a cover to hide their atrocities and lies to the public.
On the other hand, Abdullah Badawi, despite all his shortcomings and incompetencies, could still be considered humane. His only streak of vice is his lying habit. But being a compulsive liar, and being consistent at it, as Anwar said, we can still understand his messages by taking the opposites of all his words.
Abdullah, has already lost to his fellow UMNO warlords. Even if he hangs on to power, he only has two more years. And there are many impatient warlords who might not even give him another two months. By refusing to concede his power to Anwar in a democratic fashion, he will only be sacrificing his reputation with the label of a power-crazy undemocratic dictator, and goes down in history with people like Hitler, Pol Pot, Marcos, Mugabe and the likes. And his internal enemies in UMNO will benefit by gaining power without the burden of the label.
So, the only logical move by Abdullah is to graciously handover power to Pakatan Rakyat and preserve his last chance for a legacy. At least people will remember him for being democratic and might even be forgiven for all his undoings the last 4 years. Personally, for Abdullah to decide otherwise will be too costly without any additional advantages.
